27. Expectant Couple Killed on Way to Hospital; Baby Survives

On March 13, Michael Schwirtz writes an article about an accident taken place in Brooklyn. In first three  paragraphs, Schwirtz introduces the readers to the article with a summary of its main point. A couple was on their way to the hospital when they were struck by a car and were killed. Nathan Glauber and Raizy Glauber, were both 21 and had been married for a year. Mrs. pregnant, and the baby boy, delivered after his mother's death, survived. Later on, to support his main idea, the author adds some people's testimony and opinions about the accident, to the article. For example, he mentions Yisroel Altman, who rushed to the scene shortly after the accident, that said that he saw emergency responders use metal cutters to remove Mr. Glauber, who was already dead. Ms. Glauber, on the other hand, was thrown from the car and landed under a tractor. Schwirtz, then, to end his article mentions other people besides Mr Altman, including Sarah Gluck, one of their family members, who said: “They were very excited, of course they were very excited,” she said. “They were always glowing, they were just this glowing couple, pure and good and never hurt a soul.”

The purpose of the author in this article is to inform the readers about the accident that took place in Brooklyn. Besides that, even though it is not explicit, another purpose seems to be to inform them that terrible things can happen to the innocent people who do not deserve.  To do that, he uses several rhetorical devices and appeals to the readers' emotions and makes them feel pity. He not only uses dictions such as "serious", "ejected", "thrown from the vehicle", and many others, but he quotes many people that saw the accident or knew the couple since long ago such as Miss Gluck as mentioned before. This strategy of quoting does not only appeal to the readers' emotions, but also gives them credibility, making them believe that this accident did really happen and was extremely serious.

  1. The second purpose for the article is interesting. Do you think it was intended? Or is the author dumfounded by this misfortunate couple?
"Diction" always singular. Several examples of emotional or violent diction choices show the author is trying to create pity.
Also, pay attention to your commas and your pronouns. Both can cause confusion in the reader's mind.
