"You could call this about as close to a cure, if not a cure, that we've seen," Dr. Fauci is quoted by Daniel Politi, on March 3rd. Politi starts hist article by stating the obvious to reader, that a baby has apparently been cured, he says though that it is not official but the baby has been going through treatment and if it continues to stay healthy then it's cured. He states that the baby was born in Mississippi and is two-and-a-half years old; and in such a young age was given three-drugs right after birth, also stating how aggressive this treatment can be. Politi says that The New York Times talks to many other specialist who are not convinced that the baby was infected, yet researchers claim that the baby was indeed infected because they did various of test on the baby, that all came out positive on the first month he was born. Politi writes in his article that the mother says that she also did not know she was infected and hadn't seen any doctors throughout her pregnancy, in the United States, though, is really hard to find a mother-to-baby infection because they are treated during their pregnancy to prevent the baby from having the infection also. He also says that in countries that are not developed and lack resources these treatments are rare making the probability of the mother passing it to the babies more likely. Politi ends his article by stating, a previous statement, with the only other case that a person has been cured from HIV; the berlin old man, that unlike the berlin man, these results would help develop a new standard of treatment.
In Politi article, he uses many types of rhetorical devices. Politi uses allusion when siting many people and television news. He quotes Dr. Anthony Fauci, "You could call this about as close to a cure, if not a cure, that we've seen." Explaining that even though the final results haven't been seen yet, it can already be considered a cure. Politi also refers to The New York Times and CNN to make is point and article stronger. Politi also uses analogy in his article when comparing this resent cure to the middle-aged mand from berlin, and how they where both with HIV and both cured. In thos example he also states contrast between them, saying that unlike the Berlin man, this resent cure, will brink new ways of treatment. Throughout Politi article he emphasizes on the inportance of this resent discovery and how this is very good news in the medical field, by doing this he makes his diction very strong, and makes his point strong and direct, which makes his readers understand and agree with his arguments.
Interesting article choice. What do you think the author wants the reader to believe after reading the article? Does he simply want us to be encourage about medical progress in the fight against AIDES or is there something else?
ReplyDeleteYou make quite a few mistakes (spelling, usage and grammar) throughout your response. Make sure you take your time and reread what you have written before posting it.
Also, diction is not made stronger through argumentation or emphasis. Since it is the author's word choice, diction is one of the tools used show the emphasis and create the tone of the article.
