23. Nature Thinks Obama Should Stop Dithering and Approve the Keystone Pipeline

On February 1st, Will Oremus wrote an article regarding the Keystone XL Pipeline issue. He introduces his topic by explaining what the project is about and that the U.S. government is rejecting the idea, but don’t have enough reasons to do so. He states both groups of people who are against Keystone project and groups support it, but emphasizes of the journal Nature. Oremus quotes a passage from this publishing group to explain why Obama’s administration should accept the Keystone Project and then adds to it with his own thoughts on the subject. He then says what is currently happening regarding the issue (the State Department postponed the decision) and ends with some humor.

The author’s purpose in writing this post was to inform the readers about the Keystone Pipeline decision and persuade them that the government should approve it. In order to support his thesis, Oremus uses a quote from a well respected journal in which the editor’s supported the project. He appeals to logic (logos) when he says that regardless of if Obama’s administration approves of rejects the Keystone project, whatever the environmentalist’s are fighting for will not be changed since it is up to Canada’s government. And since the U.S. would benefit it (getting over the energy security issue) it is better to approve it than to reject it. He ends his article with an analogy to football in order to mock the government’s postponement of the decision and gives the link to another article regarding a football loss. Despite providing an argument for the rejection of the project (investment in new clean technologies would also yield huge benefits) it is almost obvious that the author supports the Keystone project.
