An article written by Time’s associated
press said that on August 5, 2012 about six people were killed in Oak Creek
Wis. An unnamed gunman opened fire in the Sikh temple close to Milwaukee. According
to the authorities, the shooter was killed in a gun fight when police finally arrived.
Two people had been killed outside the temple and four more killed when the
shooter entered the temple. After the ordeal woman and children were found
hiding in the temple closets. It is unknown exactly how many people were
wounded. People have been hospitalized and some are in surgery. Many people are
still awaiting news about how serious the victim’s injuries are. Among the
wounded are the son of the temple president’s uncle and the officer who killed
the shooter. The temple president’s son, Jatin Der Mangat, said when the police
announced the deaths, “It was like the heart just sad down.” Sikhs are a monotheistic
faith that was founded nearly 500 years ago in South Asia. The Sikhs do not
cover their hair the men avoid shaving their beards and wear turbans. Sikhs are often said to be confused with
Muslims.
The article has a lack of
information due to how recent the event was. No one knows yet what the shooters
intentions were or who the shooter was. This article has some eyewitness
reports from police, priests, and people in the parking lot.
The purpose of this article, like
most other, is to inform. People living close by the area of the shootings
would probably be more interested and benefited. This article would also be of
interest to people in the gun control debate and possibly some researchers. There
is not much drawing in the reader with this article. It is short and to the
point and the title basically says everything a reader needs to know. Close to
the end the article does say some about Sikhs beliefs to someone who is not
familiar with Sikhs.
