32. Wood: The fuel of the future – Environmental Lunacy in Europe

On April 6th, an article was posted on the Economist discussing the business of the European investments in wood as a “renewable” source of energy. The author presents the argument for why European nations considered wood as a renewable energy, even though it sounded ludicrous, and then he explained how it would hypothetically work. Each step of the progress to elevate wood as a main renewable energy is presented, showing what companies were able to take advantage of this label and how they did it. The author explains the way companies intend to profit from the use of wood and predicts the estimated amounts companies would gain from that business. However, halfway through the article, the author says that this method of using wood as a source of renewable energy is not efficient since the process to convert the wood into wood pellets and to transport it from other places outweighs the amount of carbon absorbed from replanted trees. He also says that the theory disregards other facts about carbon emissions and concludes that using wood as a renewable energy source is more costly, does not decrease carbon emissions, and discourages other more effective renewable energy sources.

The author’s purpose in writing this article is to inform their readers and to persuade them to believe that wood should not be considered a renewable source of energy. He uses statistics as well as quotes from large companies and professionals to explain the side of the issue that supports the use of wood as well as to explain the side which refutes the idea. The author appeals to logic to explain his reasoning and uses definition in the article to use terms appropriate to the topic. The tone is informal with the use of contractions and certain words, but the author maintains a good posture in his writing presenting his own views on the subject.

32. Why Do We Laugh at North Korea But Fear Iran?

http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2013/04/why-do-we-laugh-at-north-korea-but-fear-iran/274680/

Straight forward, Julian Hattem a reporter at The Hill, says on April 4th that there is something about Kim Jong Un that makes Americans laugh and not believe his treats. Hattem begins his article explaining that when famous basket ball player Dennis Rodman was called to go to North Korea in February, the United States "giggled." He then talks about a propaganda video that shows Obama and American troops on fire, and a little before a Korean dreaming about a rocket destroying an American city, they laughed and mocked them, saying "It was bizarre from start to finish." Hattem then says "A man starves his own people and threatens to start a nuclear war, and Americans laugh. What a bizarre thing to do." Hattem then talks about why they fear, on the other hand, threats from Iran, and the differences that North Korea and Iran has. Hattem then says that it's also a matter of geography. He says that even though North Korean claims, there is no way that their rockets can reach an American mainland, because of the distance. Even if it could, there is plenty of time for the United states to shoot it down while in the Pacific Ocean. Hattem then ends explaining that, they mock the North koreans, because the Kim regime has remained steadfast of American hegemony. Americans are already used to North Korea being awful, but not awful enough to put in action a military response. Nothing has changed in North Korea, "they torture their own people, they threaten us, they rattle sabers, and we mock them because they've been threatening and rattling sabers for years. And still nothing changes."

In this article Hattem states very strong but true statements that show why the United States aren't so worried about North Korean threats on American mainlands. Hattem makes allusions to famous basketball player Rodman, and says how Kim Jong Un welcomed Rodman into their country, and despite anything, Kim is a huge  fan. Hattem explains that, after a recently launched propaganda about a Korean sleeping and dreaming about an attack on american soil and Obama and American troops on fire, they all mocked and laughed at the North Koreans. He puts an emphasize on why it would be next to impossible for North Korea to bomb an American mainland, and how his threats are nothing. He then contrasts this situation with Iranian situations, he explains why the fear Iran and not North Korean. His diction thought the essay is strong, but in some parts a little sarcastic and ironic. Hattem ends his article making a very true yet strong statement by going back in history and explaining that North Korea has threatened them a long way back, and yet nothing changes.

31. Can China Stop North Korea?

http://www.theatlantic.com/china/archive/2013/04/can-china-stop-north-korea/274626/

On April 3rd, Matt Schiavenza, an associate editor at The Atlantic, wrote an article explaining on how Beijing as less influence over North Korea. he begins his article by explaining the recent threat that South Korea has received from the North. He says that Kim Jong Un, the new dictator of North Korea, has vowed to start a nuclear war. agains the South. Schiavenza says that Kim Jong Un, has prevented the workers from the South, to enter the Kaesong Industrial Park, that was once a symbol of hopeful reconciliation. United states steams and Beijing expresses they have regret and hope for peace on the North Korean peninsula. Schiavenza goes on to explain that Beijing protects many countries and are ready to stand up for the East China Sea, Japan and the Philippines, and China is the only North Korean ally, providing them with 80 percent of its consumer goods and 45 percent with food. Meaning that is China decides to stop providing for North Korea, they would collapse. Schiavenza points out that China, does not want them to collapse, because it would cause a messy humanitarian situation, and it would foster the creation of a unifies, pro-U.S. Korea on China`s northeastern flank, "depriving Beijing of a valuable buffer against American interest." because of this China need the North Koreans and as Schiavenza states it, "and North Korea knows it." Schiavenza finishes his article with a question, that can calm down anyones nerves but also make them tense. he says; "Is there a chance this situation might change?" the same answer to most possible question, yes it can, he says that Kim Jong Un put a Prime Minister who supports the Chinese-style, so the Kim Jong Un, may be open to think over the situation he is creating.

In this article Schiavenza presents a very strong topic that has been talked about in the last few weeks. He doe not one talk about weather or not China will be able to stop this war and privet the North Koreans to attack the South. His focus is on how China doesn't want a war, but they do not want North Korea to collapse. His diction throughout the article is very strong and assertive, he shows new points and new views of this situation. Schiavenza also uses allusions when he states and talks about Corporation and World War II. By the tone of Schiavenza voice, you can see that he, himself knows that there might be a very stung nuclear war, but to give hope to many people, Schiavenza states a very good and promising statement, he says that even though Kim Jong Un wants to start a war, the dictator put as one of his Prime Minister, a man that believes in the Chinese-style of economics, which may make the dictator think a little bit more about starting a war.

32. Chinese bird flu toll rises to 6

http://www.salon.com/2013/04/05/chinese_bird_flu_toll_rises_to_6_partner/

In Fain Greenwood's article, "Chinese bird flu toll rises to 6," he informs people about the epidemic going around China. Greenwood starts his article by revealing the measure China is taking to avoid the bird flu, or H7N9. It is a newly found disease which have killed 6 people ranging from 4 to 83 years old. This specific disease which is transferred through avian animals does not particularly show any warning signs, making it harder to find. It doesn't seem to be infectious and China's taking many precautions to avoid it to spread. Greenwood ends his article by stating that there is no risk of the H7N9 to spread internationally.

The author's purpose in writing this article is to warn people about the H7N9, specifically the citizens of China. To prove his point, Greenwood uses many quotes, which gives credibility to the article. He uses experts and organizations who work with these kind of problems, making the case more reliable. His article is formal and serious, as he tries to inform people about a disease which have killed 6 people out of 14. The audience is for everyone, so that they can be careful and avoid things which may lead to the disease. Greenwood does a good job to inform the readers and tell them all the informations which have been revealed by the Chinese authorities.

32.Odd Animal Deaths, Deformities Linked to Gulf Oil Spill?

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2011/04/110420-gulf-oil-spill-anniversary-animals-deaths-science-nation/

On the first anniversary of the Gulf Oil Spill scientists are observing strange deaths and deformities  in animals that could be related to the disaster, experts say. over the past few months, the death rate of dolphins and turtles has risen drastically and some fish that inhabit the Gulf's coral reef  have developed abnormalities such as fish with deformed ovaries and missing fins. UWF's Patterson has recently observed an increase in physical abnormalities consistent with oil exposures in red snappers that live in Gulf's coral reefs. Also the oil spill of Exxon Valdez effected the food web and ecosystem and most species have not recovered to the same levels as they were settled before. and these unusual symtoms and abnomality have been concerning Patterson.

The author of this article exposes the truth and concerns expecialists are having about the big oil spill that have effected  the Gulf negatively last year. It has been horrifying for biologists and marine biologists  to see what the oil spill have done to the lives in the ocean. the author does a well formed article by portraying exactly what and why the especialists are concerns about at the same time doing a wise job advising and warning the audience of what is happening informing them. many examples and quotations and experience of great known especialists touches the audience emotionally and logically.

31. Not Going to the Dogs

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/jurisprudence/2013/03/supreme_court_police_dogs_can_t_sniff_for_drugs_on_your_porch.html

Emily Bazelon wrote on Tuesday about how the Supreme Court decided to not allow police dogs to sniff drugs on one's porch. She started the article introducing two court cases she mentioned in one of her past articles published in the fall. She explained the difference between the two cases - that the Constitution's definition of home was "a place [people] retreat to with special expectations of privacy" concluding that a car cannot be regarded as a home, hence the lost of Harris' case. Further on, Balezon explained in detail about Jardines' case, how he won and later contrasted it with Harris' issue.

Balezon's purpose for writing this article was to inform about two court issues, and what the Supreme Court decided on a conclusion based on both of these cases. Her article seemed to be directed to those who had been following the case, but since she briefly summarized both of the cases in the first paragraph, it was likely that the article could be understood by anyone who decided to read it. Her tone was mostly conversational, as evident throughout the article when she used the pronouns I and you, but the article was not so clear in her stand regarding the issue. Her diction was not hard to understand, and she was able to support her arguments by alluding to several sources, such as the Amendments, Justice Antonin Scalia, and a 2001 case - all considered credible sources that were valid to support her arguments.

31. "Kevin Ware's Injury Was So Grisly It Left His Coach Talking About Death"

http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2013/04/01/kevin_ware_leg_injury_louisville_basketball_player_has_surgery_following.html

Josh Voorhees wrote an article to Slate newspaper on  April 1, 2013 talking about the game last night between Louisville and Duke left the crowd and players shocked during the first half. Kevin Ware, a Louisville basketball player factured his right tibia. However, it was worse than it sounds. His leg practically snapped in half, someone even said his bone was six inches out. This injury was considered the worst injury in history with college sports. He got surgery right away and doctors say there is still hope that he will be able to play in one year. Although this may seem like a decade for a college player, it is considered a mircle that he will be able to play basketball again after that horrible injury. Ware´s teammates and coach were crying after they had seen what had happened. It left everyone speechless.

Josh Voorhees wrote a quick article on the shocking news that happened last night. Voorhees did a good job of explaining exactly what had happened however he could of gone a little deeper into the science part of how it happened and what Ware could of posabily done wrong to get that kind of result during the game. His tone is very serious yet also simpathetic. He talks about how Ware´s teammates and coaches were saddened by what had happened. Voorhees could have made his article more develped by using quotes from his teammates as to what they were thinking while this happened and also doctors who had done surgery on his leg and the results of the surgery.
